Question from the Heidelberg Catechism

37 What is the meaning of the word 'suffered'? That He (Jesus), in body and soul, throughout His entire life on earth—but especially at the end of His life—bore the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race, so that by His suffering, as the only atoning sacrifice, He might deliver our body and soul from eternal damnation and obtain for us God's grace, righteousness, and eternal life.

1.    Do you have any comments or questions regarding the talk on the theme ‘I believe… in Jesus’ suffering and death’ or the Bible passage?

2.    What does it mean that Christ bore the ‘curse’ of the law for us on the cross? (See also: Galatians 3:13)
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.

3.    By laying down His life, Jesus paid the debt of sin. Why, then, must a believer still die?

4.    How does the depth of Christ’s humiliation—as expressed in the Creed—help you when you are going through deep spiritual distress or depression?

5.    Why is it important that Christ’s humiliation in hell did not remain the ‘final stage,’ but was followed by the resurrection?
